Hey everyone,

Got a simple question for you, (or it should be). How do you physically capture a printer on an lpt port for a printer that has been installed as a network printer. In windows 98 it has a capture port button under the details tab in the properties window. In XP, no button.

Thanks.

I have the same problem...How can I capture port in XP?...

On my Peer-to-Peer network, Printers, Properties [for the chosen printer] window has a Ports tab that lists the ports available/shared/mapped printers and a check box for the port to use. Heading is Print to the following port(s). Documents will print to the first free checked port.. I'd think unchecking unneeded ports for each printer would accomplish the same as capturing the port.

You can browse to the printer and right click on it - then select Capture Printer Port...

or

You can use the printer installation wizard... select local printer (next), then create a new port using the local port option (next), then enter a port name (i tend to use the name of the printer) then click OK... now you can install the drivers and all should be fine...

Set the printer up on a non-existent LPT port, ususally LPT2 works. Open a command prompt and enter:

NET USE LPTn: \\SERVER\PRINTER

Where n is the port you installed the printer on, SERVER is the name of the server, and PRINTER is the name of the shrared printer. This will redirect everything from LPTn to the network resource. It should also persist between reboots. To remove the capture:

NET USE LPTn: /DELETE
