WHy wont it let me untar?

Sounds to me like the tarball is corrupt.

try checking the md5sum against the one onserver. Transmissions can be garbled sometimes... shit happens.

If the checksums do not match, then re-download.

It would appear that the file got corrupted durring compression. Try gunziping the file first. If you don't get any errors, then try to extract the resulting tar.
