I was given a computer with NT 4.0 and when it boots up a dialog box appears which says Administrator, IS and asks for a password. How can I bypass the password and setup a new one?

in windows nt, it is mandatory for a user to logon, whether local or on the network, to be able to work on that specific computer. this means you cannot cancel the logon procedure.

still, you did not mention wheter you simply forgot the password for the administrator account or whether you simply want to log on using another user account. pls confirm what exactly is your problem.

:)

you can log on locally, do this by selecting your domain as the computer name, and username is Administrator, with no password (hopefully this should work!) Jay~

Did you open the box to see if there was an ID for you.

If you were given a new computer they probably made an account for you on it to log it. Administrator shows up probably because the last person logged on to it was using the Administer account.

We do not know the administrator password. The computer has not been used for about 2 years and password was forgotten.

The easiest way is to go back to who you got the PC from and ask them for the administrator password or for them to add you (alias with password) to the administrators group. If this something you bought you might just format reload the OS. Good Luck

If you have an account on the server you can log on by using your user name and password. Even servers are not protected from local access by users. Unfortunately it will not give you administrative privliges unless you are in the Administrative group. Do you know anyone that now has or has ever had Administrative rights at one time on this server?

If I am incorrect on any of this please let me know.
