I am trying to set up our fax service at work on a windows
2000 Pro machine and when I select Properties in Services
for Fax Service and select the Log On tab, I try to type
in a user account that has administrative priveleges on
the current machine that is part of the network domain and
I get:

"The specified domain either does not exist or could not
be contacted."

I have followed the instructions strictly from
/?kbid=246151

but can't get past the Log on account.

What is not allowing this user to be added with the
correct password????

. The user is a local administrator, with a local administrator account, not a Domain administrator?

. The workstation client is Win2k Professional and not XP?

I have tried domain accounts and local user accounts set up with administrator privleges, nothing works. I have tried a couple of domain user accounts as well.

The way I am doing this is I browse
for "this account" on the Log On Tab (after going to Control Panel - Services - Fax Service - properties - Log On tab)

yes it is windows 2000 PRO.

OK , ignore my last.

I tried it with the local administrator user account and it accepted that.

but, when I try to start the fax service in services I get:

"Could not start the Fax Service on the local computer"

ERROR 1058: The service cannot be started iether because it is disabled or because it has no enabled divices associated with it."

However there is an external fax modem that has been installed correctly with Add/Remove hardware.

???

Interesting term "HCL List" never heard about that before.

Hardware Catalog Listing?

Ok, I did a search on that link and did find the U.S. Robotics Sportster V.34.

The one I am using is a 28,800, could this be too old and maybe is not the same one on the HCL?

But it installed ok and is listed in the system hardware with out any errors. ??

Found the problem.

The hardware profile on the bottom of the Log On tab wasn't
enabled.
