Can't see Win 98 workstations from XP or 2000?

I can't see any of my Windows 98 PC's from Windows XP or 2000 Network Places. I can ping them, but all I can see is just XP, 2000 and NT 4.0 PC's

I have a Windows 98 PC that can get to the XP box, but the XP box doesn't see the 98 PC.

Any ideas?

Have you set sharing on any folders on your win98 boxes?

is the xp running ntfs or fat32? do they have the same workgroup? they should both be on the same FAT system

Try sharing a printer on the win98 machine use 'Search for Printers' from the startup menu on the xp & 2000 boxes, search using the IP address of the win98 machine.

Are you running peer-to-peer or client/server?

If in a peer-to-peer network, do all machines belong to the same workgroup?

Do all machines have the same subnet?

Are all machines physically connected? (don't laugh, I've seen it happen before where two hubs weren't properly connected)

I have sharing set in some of my 98 PC's but not all.

The XP's C: is NTFS, All PC's have the same WORKGROUP defined. All have the same subnet.

A search for the IP address fails, but I can ping.

Hay Windoze - Can my problem be the NTFS partition? I don't want to format my hard drive if I don't have to.

Any other ideas would be most helpful.

You need sharing installed and at least one resource (drive, folder, printer) shared on any Win98 machine you want to be 'visible' on your network.

The filestore type (FAT, FAT32, NTFS etc) on the various machines DOES NOT MATTER (eg, XP machine on NTFS 3.1, NT machine on NTFS 3.0, Win98 on FAT32 and Win95 on FAT will all be able to access each others filestore if networked correctly).

I have shared drives and folder on several 98 PC's. I even tried creating a new share, and still nothing.

Try turning off the XP built in firewall.This is done through the advanced tab on the local area connection properties.

Try resetting your BIOS to it's default settings. A co-worker had the same exact issue and this fixed it. Don't ask we why, but it worked for him.

Turn off or reconfigure all firewalls. Zonealarm stopped me from comunicating until it was properly configured and listed all of the computers on the local net.

I have no firewalls. The XP PC has that option unchecked by default. I read futuretech's note and found this setting unchecked on several XP machines.

How about enabling NETBIOS over TCP on the XP and W2K machines.

Sounds Crazy, but I had the same problem for days!
I changed the name of the Workgroup to one that I had not used before and viola, after changing the Worgroup name on the 98 and 2000 workstation, Everybody got happy and could see each other!

I've had a bad port on a switch cause a problem similar to this before
