All access programs have been running very slow the last week on the server. At lunch today, I was going to do some upgrades, and when I got everyone off the system I was going to work on, I ran compact/repair first. It would not run, it would hang up and when I checked task manager, it showed not responding. I checked several different mdb's, and none would run the utility. I copied 2 over to my hard drive, and compact repair ran no problems.

Look to see if there is an ldb lock file open. If so, Access is still seeing your database as "open" and will not let you run the compact/repair. If that is the case, you'll need to delete the ldb file. You may have to do that from the server. If you are unable to delete the ldb file from the server, usually the only option I know of is to reboot the server.

That is the only scenario I have ever come across while attempting to compact and repair a database.

Hope this helps,

Dear Smack,

You solved your own prblem and you just do not know it.

I have learned a long time ago that you should never compact a database on a network drive, if at all possible.
Why, because Access does so much reading and rewritting that it is much quicker to copy to your local drive, compact locally and then copy back to your network drive.

This being said, if compact is taking you a very long time (Appears to not be responding) when you try to compact a db on the network drive, I would guess that your network itself or the server in question is experiencing problems rather than your access database(s).

So:
1) Check to see if your server is running low on memory.
2) Check to see if your server is running on hard disk space.
3) Try rebooting server.
4) Power down all Servers, Hubs and switches and then do a complete, fresh power up after at least a 30 second shut down.

Hope This Helps,

Thank you for the responses. I just now figured out what it was (hanging my head) I had logged off to see if it was my pc and encountered the same issues. Did the full shut down and checked all of my cable connections to the server. Brought it back up and no problems C/R on server files. Don't know if it was the cable or something in the pc but now it works. I will save your comments for future reference - they aere very good.
Thank you.
