After installing and later removing DocSmartz (a pdf to word converter) I have been left with its add in toolbar in Word and an extra option (DocSmartz Open PDF) on the File menu.

So far I have tried the following to remove them with no success.

Used regedit to remove every reference left to DocSmartz.
Used words customize toolbars to delete the toolbar - but it just returns when you re-start word.
Returned to the restore point I made before trying out the trial version of DocSmartz.

Does anyone have any ideas how I can remove these options and buttons? OK - so its not crucial. Nothing happens if you click on them. It's just annoying.

BTW. IMHO don't bother with the trial version of DocSmartz. The trial version is so crippled that you get no idea if it will do what you want to do. It also installed a ton of stuff into the system32 folder - and I have no idea if the uninstall removed it all. I'm going to go with solid converter. At least in the trial period (15 days) you can convert up to 3 pages of a pdf into word and a whole word document into pdf (albeit with their logo etc as a footnote on every page)

There's no single answer to this - and there are some bugs in Word so that deleting Toolbars, on occasion, is ineffective. I have never found a way to guarantee removal of a toolbar from a template if Word decides it wants to keep it.

It may be, however, that the toolbar is being recreated every time you start Word. If DocSmartz installed an AddIn which the uninstall didn't remove you can remove it manually. To see if there is one, first look under Tools > Templates and AddIns and/or check out Word's StartUp Folders.

Enjoy,
Tony

There is nothing in addins.
The folder C:...\Application Data\Microsoft\Word\STARTUP
is empty.

However, there is nothing like explaining a problem for finding the solution. Your response gave me added enthusiasm to have one last go.
I finally removed the toolbar permanently. By using the Macro Organiser, rather than customize/delete.
Tools>Macro>Macros>Organizer>Toolbars
and deleting it from there. That stuck.

So now I was just left with the extra option on the file menu. This time right clicking on the toolbar and selecting customize, then Commands, then selecting File from the menu bar and right clicking on the docsmartz entry I could select delete.

This time that stuck as well.

Jeez - not exactly obvius is it? Don't you just love Office!

It may not be in the username STARUP folder.

It could be in the program STARTUP folder. Something like:

C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\Startup

That is where system level add-ins are commonly placed.
