I am using Vault to produce duplicates of NetBackup catalogs so that we can send them offsite, unfortunately a small number of media has been used from the scratch pool rather than the pool defined for this task. I need to rescue this media.

I have deassigned, deleted, expidated, you name it I have tried it, but they still FREEZE when used by pukka backups as the system still thinks they contain Catalog backups. I have tried to run a Label task, erase task, they also produce an error due to the Catalog backup on the media.

Anyone have any bright ideas ?

vmquery -m <mediaID>
.
.
volume pool: NBDB_Duplicate (6)
status: 0x1
.
this will show you the pool# and the status#
insert it in the <...> below
pool# would be 6 and status would be 1 in example shown above

vmquery -deassignbyid <mediaID> <pool#> <status#>

Already used vmquery to deassign these cartridges, that still does not release them.

I think I need to trash the labelling on this media and start again, but NBU just will not allow me....

Perhaps this technote will be helpful.
It mentions using the command vmdelete -m <mediaid>

How to manually remove a tape completely from NetBackup/Media Manager.

Once a Catalog backup has written to the header on the tape you cannot use it. Use bplabel and relabel the tape

well once it's used for a catalog backup it will not be able to write any other type of backup until you manually use the bplabel command
