cant print or save word or excel documents

My computer does nothing when I Print or Save a Word 2000 or Excel document. The egg timer appears, but it does not print (or save). Any ideas?

Using XP Pro SP2
Office 2000 SP3

Forgive me for asking, but have you done a total Shut Down for a fresh re-boot to see if the problem persists?

Yes, I am a systems administrator. So it is nothing obvious or simple. Maybe someone has had a similar problem, and found a patch or was able to edit some value in the registry to solve it.
