Hi. I have 2 win 98' comps, connected to a common hub. COMP1 has Internet connection via DirecPC (dial-up version). COMP1 also has AnalogX Proxy, which in turn gives Internet access to COMP2. Both computers see each other on the network (I can ping between them). How come I can't ping to the Internet? I have changed the ip settings on COMP2 in every possible way. I've changed ip-addr, gateway, everything. The reason I want to "ping the Internet" is to ftp to my work server. (I have already checked ftp settings on Internet options and proxy).

Give me some more info. My understanding was that only Comp1 is connected to the net thru phone line. But you are changing ip address.. on Comp2.
Are you able to ping from Comp1 but not Comp2?
Anyway if you are trying to get to the net using only Comp1, you don't need to change anyhting since you are connecting as a single user, just make sure the setting is for dial-up connection.
If you can ping from Comp1 and need Comp2 to get to the net too, You either need to use a router or have win nt/2000 installed on Comp1.

Thanks for your response Laleh. COMP1 is a gateway to internet. COMP1 and COMP2 have internet access. I can ping internet from COMP1 but not COMP2. The real problem is that I can't ftp to Internet from COMP2. I have already checked proxy settings on COMP1 (port 21). And I have used different ftp clients including the command prompt.

That seems kinda complicated. You have internet on Comp2 but can't ping?! I don't know ... but just as a try;
From the command prompt try to ftp or ping the ip address instead of real domain name.
OR try cute ftp and change the Setting to the right DUN/LAN.
