Well, actually, I can open it but it's gibberish. Thanks, in advance, for any help!

I'm running windows XP Media Center Edition Version 2002 SP2 and MS Office 2000. I've installed what are supposed to be the Works converters wp6rtf.exe and wp2krtf.exe for Works-to-Word conversions, but it's not working. I also installed the converter pack oconvpck.exe, all to no avail. I'm looking for anyone that has any ideas.

Thanks!

Try opening it from WordPad or Notepad, which come free with Windows.

I've tried notepad and wordpad already. I'll try the converter on the site suggested by tf1 now.

Thanks for the responses :)

What file extension does this Works document have?

If it is a .WPS or WPT file open it in Word (File>Open>Files of Type>Choose Works 2000 or Works 4.0)

If its a .WKS file open it in Excel (File>Open>Files of Type>Choose Microsoft Works 2.0 Files)

Hope this helps,

A.

Bummer! I already installed the converter suggested above and now when I try to open the files in Word, it says the .wps files appear to be corrupted, no matter which version of Works I select :-(

Scratching my head now...

Then it is likely true. Your next resource is to open using the 'recover text from any file' option. You will lose all the formatting but should be able to rescue all the text.

I don't get that option. I obtained another .wps file to see if it would give me the same error and it did, so I don't think both files are actually corrupt. Do you know, right off hand, a quick way to back out of the converter I installed? I can delete the files it installed, but I'm not sure if it changed or created reg entries. I can figure it out, but if you already know....

Thanks :)

Hey! I figured out the recover text thing and it worked (losing all formatting), but other machines will just open the .wps file in Word, no problem. I wonder what I'm missing????

Thanks :)

If it is just that oe machine then try the following.

With all applications closed, go to your temp folder (usually in Documents and Settings, Username, Local Settings, Temp) and delete ALL the abandoned temp files.

Then find your normal.dot file and rename it as normal.bad.

Open Word and test the conversion again.

Thanks, tf1 :) I already found a remedy before seeing your post. It wasn't just one machine, but I did have a couple of machines that had no trouble converting the files, so I copied the files from:

C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\TextConv

to the same folder on my pc (saving a copy of the original folder before hand, of course) and it worked. I then tried it on another pc, running Win2k and Word 2000, only replacing the files if they were newer, and it worked on that pc also.

The pc I copied the files from was running Office 2003 and also had Works installed. I'm not sure if I eneded up just getting newer versions of the .cnv files or if having Works installed actually provided additional or different files. I just know it worked and my job is done when my users can do their jobs :)

Thanks so much for your help!
