can't open word 97 password protected doc's as read only

We have just added 2 HP laptops to our network with windows XP pro on them. The other machines on the network are generally NT4. We have a password protected word 97 document that can be opened as read only on the NT4 machines but will not open as read only on the XP machines. If the password is put in the XP machines will then open it but not in read only.

Can anyone please shed some light on how i will be able to open this document in read only on the xp machines.
