I've got a virus-but don't know which one. I can't open the registry editor. It opens for a split second then closes. I've scanned with spybot, Swatit, adaware, antivir and am scanning with AVG(new install) right now. Nothing has come up. Any advice as to what virus/trojan would cause this behavior and how do I get rid of it? Thanks.

Copy to a new folder and rename:

regedit.exe regedit.com
msconfix.exe msconfig.com

Do steps #1 - #4 of this FAQ: faq608-4650

Then post a Hijack This log here.

You should look at this recent thread: thread779-752688

The EXE file virus/worm/hijack is a little tough to handle, and while this particular discussion does not match your issue directly, the resolution of the problem is the same:

. Do Steps 1-4 of FAQ faq608-4650
. Do the rename of regedit.exe, and msconfix.exe to .com
. Do the registry repair for file associations for EXE files

And finally, if needed, post a Hijack This log back on this site.

I had the same problem a while ago,After a while of fiddling i found that it was my free firewall zonelabs that was the problem.i removed it and now its fine again.

I have seen ZoneAlarm freeware blamed for many things, but stopping the execution of Regedit is a new one for me.

Are you sure this was the underlying issue?

Well as far as i know,

I began disabling progs one at a time and when i finaly got to zonelabs and removed it, hey presto!

I was not doubting you, just wanted to confirm that I should add this to "odd things that happen with ZoneAlarm". It seems a reasonable software firewall product, and I have had issues with all software firewall products.

Thanks for posting about your experience.
Bill

AVG found it and removed it. All OK now. Thanks.

Make sure you stil do steps #2-#3 in the FAQ: faq608-4650
