Can't open need codec for format 3b!

I have some old audio files, they were phone messages recorded with Talkworks off the line attached to my computer. I no longer have Talkworks, but though the files are wav format I get the following error in Win Media Player when trying to open:

"The audio codec identified by the format tag 3B is required to play this file. To determine if this codec is available to download from the Web, click Web Help."

"Web Help" was no help, only saying: "The required codec cannot be found

Windows Media Player cannot play the file because the required codec cannot be found. To determine how to obtain the codec identified as 3B, contact the content provider."

Any help? Please?

I've had problems with some *.mp3 files in the past where WM woldnt play them. However, if I used MusicMatch Jukebox they will work fine. I'm not sure why but some time WM is a pain and other programs play the formats pretty well.
Other thing that comes to mind is to burn those WAV files to CD and that might be able to fix the problem and give you a backup of the files as well.

I second the motion.... if you can let us have a file sample for us to play with we might have a better idea how to get them to work. Either FTP or E-mail will be fine

Thanks all. I re-installed Talkworks and now I can hear it, even in Windows Media Player. I'm sure it was a codec that was installed with Talkworks that wasn't there before. Do you know where codecs are stored in Windows? Then I can find the file name and verify by date modified?

Now that I have reinstalled Talkworks, I can hear it. I'd like to put it into MP3, I guess that would make it playable anywhere. What's an easy (and preferably free) program to do this in?

BTW, the compression is "Rockwell ADPCM". Does that mean anything to anyone?

That's actually a modem voice codec...
To convert them to MP3, go get CDEX from

Thanks. Funny you should recommend it, I got it from cnet. I tried to convert the files but get an error.

All it says is "an error occurred while opening the input file"

I checked to see if it is read-only, it's not.

Try them in Winamp, convert there too.
Must be something screwey with Talkworks .wav format then... Cheers,
