Can't open My computer, control panel, etc.

I have a laptop running Windows XP SP1. Every time I try to open My computer, Control panel, windows explorer, etc. I get a box popping up that says "Windows explorer as encountered a problem and needs to close..." I have know idea what the problem is. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

A good indication of virus activity might be if you can access these locations via Safe Mode. See what happens when you try the FAQ link from "Bcastner".

good call, bcastner. also, i believe there are prior threads addressing explorer.exe crashing (i've searched for and relied on them to fix issues in the field).
