Hi,
I'm running XP Home - English version.
I was reading a .chm file on a Win2K PRO - German version,
brought the file home , but I cannot read the file on my XP Home.
(I can see the index of contents but clicking on any entry
has no impact on the right hand window which shows "This page cannot be displayed").

After searching for cluse, the only step forward I could make was to follow the instructions I found on the web(see below) and got the following feedback from the
MJ diagnostics tool:
(a)HTML Help 1.x Workshop Components
HH Workshop not found or not installed correctly. Try reinstalling
(b)MS Help 2 Run-time Components

*** MS Help 2 NOT installed on this PC

Could someone please tell me what this means/what I could try to get to read the .chm file (I have already reinstalled IE and the MS Critical Update indicated below)?

Best regards,Vjeko
========================

Instructions found on web:
1) Use MJ's Help Diagnostics to check that all the help viewer
components are properly installed and registered.

(The only section of the MJ's Help Report that is relevant to your
problem is the one headed "HTML Help Run-time Components".)

2) Use Microsoft Critical Update 811630 to upgrade the components used
to view help files. This is available from here:

3) Delete or rename the file hh.dat, which you should find in this
directory:

\Documents and Settings\%username%\Application Data\Microsoft\HTML
Help

The hh.dat file stores user-specific information on all the HTML Help
files on your system (favourite topics, search history, etc.), and can
cause the files to misbehave if it has somehow been corrupted. Windows
will create a new version of hh.dat when you next open any .chm file.

4) Empty your Temporary Internet Files directory. A full TIF directory
can cause HTML Help files to misbehave.

5) See the following pages for further guidance on how to resolve
XP-specific help problems:

I cannot find the reference immediately, I will look later, but:

if the base language is not English, the .chm facility will fail.

There is not repair possible for this currently.

Do not shoot the messenger of bad news!

It simply will fail.

Hi,
I just found out the answer from a colleague:
The chm file will sometimes work if it is in the Windows
partition. It works now (I have 4 partitions C:\ is for the OS but the file was (ofcourse) on the "DATA" partition).

Best regards,
Vjeko

Vjeko,

Be sure to read a slightly earlier thread on this issue as well, as the issue is complicated: thread779-770460

Hi,
I found out that in many cases the solution is to
copy/move the .chm file to the Windows/OS partition.
