I am having a problem with not being able to open some word or excel files when they are sent to me as an attachment. The error message says : Error: The Document Name or Path is Not Valid. Try these suggestions:
* Check the file permissions for the document or drive
* Use the File Open dialog box to locate the document.
(C:\...\filename.doc)

I have tried the help on the Microsoft website but that didnt' work. Any other suggestions?

Any help would be really appreciated

Have you tried saving the attachment to your C: drive before opening it, or are you just double clicking on the attachment? Is it a true attachment, or did the sender copy a shortcut to a file on their computer and put that as the attachment?

I have tried to save the document to the hard drive both with a new name and the same name. Same thing. The person sending it is opening the file and sending from Word as send to recepient as attachment.

Try this, Go into Excel go to Tools Menu, Options, General Tab and make sure there is no tick in ignore other applications. Save the change if you needed to make one, shut down Outlook if open, and reopen and try opening the attachment again.

Cannot remember if there is a setting to do this in Word, but would suggest a quick look through the Tools, options menu and tabs etc.

Has the sender tried to take the saved document and drag it into an already started email message (put it in a message instead of going from Excel to Send to recipient as attachment)? Does the Excel file have macros in it that might be causing trouble? Sorry for having more questions than answers....

huronbay: Can you double-click any file (BESIDES THE ONES YOU'RE RECEIVING) in Windows Explorer and they open properly? If yes, then the person is not doing as they should. They may be opening the doc via email like you're trying to do, and then not saving the file before they send it back to you... but it's def'ly on their end. Anne Troy

We have tried everything imaginable to get the email attachments to open but nothing seems to work. We finally split the file into very small pieces and emailed that way and put them back together on this end to get the job done. Thanks for everyones help.

I am thinking it is time for a reinstall of Windows98

Windows 98 has absolutely nothing to do with this issue, I am sure. Reinstalling Windows will likely take care of it, however, because you'll have to reinstall everything.

There is some other issue at stake. Anne Troy
