can't open a new IE window

Hi,
I cannot open a new window within IE 6. For example, I click on a link and all I get is an empty IE box and then it hangs. It affects my windows update because it opens a new window, and my browser does not allow me.
please help.

IE 6.0 on XP Pro WON'T LOAD UNLESS I PRESS F5

you can just hold the shift button then click on a link and this will open the new webpage in a new window
