I get the error message "another process has locked a portion of the file" Even though the file is not open elsewhere no AV running and only on certain files on the network and only if you try to drag and drop the files using explorer. YOu can move the files with no probs if you cut and paste Please help me I have been trying to fix this for 3 months :0)

It sounds to me like you have a compressed drive or have compressed a partition of your drive. I don't know a lot about doublespace and the other compression programs, other than they are a nightmare to use, they are a performance nightmare and unreliable at best.

Can you give me some additional information:

Open Explorer, try to move a file by dragging it and make sure you get the error, then right click on the file and look at properties - see if it's an archive or read only file. Tell us the name - EXACTLY (does it have spaces?)

Double click on My Computer, then right click on c: and tell me if it's Fat32 formatted.

How much used/free space do you have on your Hard Drive?

Did you copy these files from another computer? What was it running and how did you copy the files?

When was the last time you checked for errors and defragmented yoru Hard Drive? If it keeps crashing when you try to defrag (do it every month!!) then boot in safe mode and defrag.

What OS are you running? Have you checked for updates?

This will help us give you more concise advise )

Thanks it is a brand new PC we are running Novell 5 SP6a and it is in Windows 98SE. The files are all on the server I will check on the compression. Interestingly the files are archived and if you do a check SUM they work perfectly.

I will try the other options tomorrow as i have to go now. Till then Lottie
