Help! I'm trying to map my drive and connect it to our network but haven't been able to do so. I've done this with all of our other computers no problem but this time it isn't working. When I try to connect up to it it simply says it cannot connect. I've made sure to check my server name and share name. Any help would be great.

Well, lets start off with some simple things. Can you ping the server by name from your machine? If not by name, then by IP address? Do you have a firewall enabled on your machine that might be preventing you from connecting? Also, please post back the exact message you get when you try to map the share.

I'm trying to map my drive and connect it to our network"
so ur sitting on the xp sp3 pc?

"When I try to connect up to it it simply says it cannot connect"
now ur sitting on another pc and u try 2 connect 2 the xp sp3 pc?
"I've made sure to check my server name and share name"
the server name is the name of the xp sp3 pc and the share name is the share u created on the xp sp3 pc?

are u in a domain or workgroup?
did u enable file and printersharing on the xp sp3 pc?
can u connect by //ip/sharename?

........???

I am in a workgroup. I enabled file and print sharing. I am not able to connect using the ip either. I do not have a firewall enabled but under the exceptions tab when in the firewall properties file and print sharing is check marked. I deselected it but still couldn't connect. The exact message reads "the network path...could not be found

What are the results of pinging (by IP and name) the server? Do you have any difficulties reaching any other network resources? Can you ping the other Windows XP computers on the network? Also, where does this share reside? On a Windows Server, another XP machine, a NAS device, etc.?

Can you explain to me how to ping the server? I don't have any trouble with other network resources. I have 3 computers mapped to this drive and they all connect fine.
Each computer in our office has roughly one utility (program/printer/etc.) that all the other computers connect to for access. Every other attempt to and form any computer has worked fine except when trying to map this drive to other computers.

Go to Start> click on Run> type cmd and hit Enter. Once the command prompt opens, type ping 192.168.0.5 or whatever the IP address of the server is. To ping by name you would type ping Server01 or whatever the hostname of the server is. This will test basic connectivity between you and the server. You should get four replies from the server if no communication problems exist. If the ping requests time out, then we know there is a connectivity issue. Yes, I realize that we already know there is a connectivity issue as this is what this thread is about, but this will provide some basic information to help further troubleshoot. Please post back with the results of pinging by IP and name.

The ping worked fine when I tried did it by IP address and server name. It says that the success rate was 100% for each.

Alright, so we do know that you can at least communicate with the server. You stated earlier that these PCs were in a workgroup. Could you please provide the following information? How many PCs total are in the workgroup and how many total clients have this drive mapped? What OS are all the clients running (XP Pro, Home)? What OS is the server running? Has the XP SP3 machine ever been able to map the drive? Have you insured that the XP machine is in the proper workgroup and the proper account permissions are set on the file share?

2 get that straight for me.

u have a pc where u share a drive on, and u try to access that share with the xp sp3 pc?!

the pc´s are in the same workgroup?
check eventviewer for errors
how do u try 2 connect, through browsing, by script, net use command?

"Each computer in our office has roughly one utility (program/printer/etc.) that all the other computers connect "

so on the xp sp3 pc, is there something shared and access working?
if not, share a folder and access it by another pc.

can u pls do a ipconfig /all on the server and xp sp3 pc and post it here?

There are 8 pc's in the workgroup. They are all mapped to one another, so for instance the computer that is our UPS hub has 7 computers mapped to it. This computer, likewise, will have 7 mapped to it. But obviously none are yet. All run Windows XP Pro. I've looked through the file sharing a few times and can not find any differences from the other computer, unless isn't something more than the basics.

Please check out the following links to assist with your problem.

The following "Practically Networked" links are excellent guides for configuring Windows XP for networking. Please go through the guides and compare your settings against the ones in the guides. "Simple File Sharing" will be the easiest to set up.

Also, please verify that the Windows XP SP3 computer is using the correct Workgroup name. If you have any troubles using any of the documentation above just let us know.

Hello Abby,

It sounds like Joey is hit the target with the Workgroup name. If the rogue XP machine has a workgroup name with a mispelling or a totally different workgroup typed into the field the it will not be able to map drives or share drives with the other machines.

Right clicking on My Computer and selecting properties then going to the Computer Name tab will allow you to compare the workgroup names between the computers.

If the machine with the issue has a different workgroup name then that is the problem, otherwise it is something a bit more complex.

CJ

Don't drink and post, save that for driving home!

The workgroup name is the same throughout our system (MSHOME) including the computer which is having trouble connecting. I'll have to check out some of those sites listed above when I get a few minutes.

what about the ipconfig /all from the 2 pcs? esp. take a look on the subnetmask and gateway
have u tried winsockfix?

how do I do an ipconfig/all?
also in response to the following...
"the pc´s are in the same workgroup?
check eventviewer for errors
how do u try 2 connect, through browsing, by script, net use command?

"Each computer in our office has roughly one utility (program/printer/etc.) that all the other computers connect "

so on the xp sp3 pc, is there something shared and access working?
if not, share a folder and access it by another pc."

The problem lies with my ability to access the shared folder on other pc's. I am able to open my folders up to share but can not access them from other computers. Since I can access back and forth freely between all other computers I assume the problem lies with the computer that is trying to share files.

first, download and run winsockfix, check if it´s working

"how do I do an ipconfig/all?"
start-run, type cmd and enter. in the opening window type ipconfig /all and hit enter. copy/paste it in here

"the pc´s are in the same workgroup?"
right click my computer-properties, choose computername tab

"check eventviewer for errors"
start-run, type eventvwr.msc and hit enter
look in apps and system

"how do u try 2 connect, through browsing, by script, net use command?"
stands for itself, what when u start-run and type \\servername\sharename?

I downloaded winsock fix and ran it. I found 1140 errors, but without registering it could only fix 1 error. I'm not sure what result I was supposed to get by running that.

The results of the ipconfig/all are below

The pc's are all in the workgroup "MSHOME"

There were a number of errors and warnings in both the apps and system section of the event viewer.

The way I tried connecting was by going to my computer, then tools--> map network drive then mapping it from there

First of all if you go to the cmd prompt and type net view do you see a list of computers (the result should look like)

\\computer1
\\computer2

If you can we can confirm that networking is ok upto this point.

if you can see results in the cmd prompt window the next thing we are going to do is try to map a drive

net use x: \\computer1\c$ /user:domain\user password

now to explain this better.

net use x: is telling you which drive letter to use.

\\computer1\c$ is the computer and share name you want mapped to the X drive

/user:domain\user... /user:domain would be the user account on the local machine or a workgroup user, I am more inclined to go with having a local user if you don't have a centralised server with accounts on it.

password is the users password for that share, you can either put the password in there or put an * and it will then prompt you for the password when you press return.

Now it will either work or it won't, if it fails tho it should give you some more information on why it failed.

Get back to us with the results.

Simon

The real world is not about exam scores, it's about ability.

Here is the result from the net view in cmd.

The command completed successfully.

It is only showing my computer on that list. Not any of the other ones that I am connected to.
