Right, I have appeared to have installed the NW 4.11 server successfully. The NIC card and the required protocol have all been loaded Successfully, as has the IDE disc drivers and so. However, if I type DISPLAY SERVERS it reads:

EDUCATIONAL_ 0 EDUCATIONAL_ 0 TEST_SERVER_ There are 3 known servers.

How’s that..? I only Specified one TEST_SERVER and EDUCATIONAL as the tree…

Also, when using the workstation to try and access the server I am unable to locate any Server or Trees….

The OS I am using is XP Pro….I have attempted with both the latest Novell 4.09 Client and the Netware Client for windows both to no avail…Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

Note: NWLinkIPX/SPX/Netbios protocol is selected on the workstation and the IPX Protocol is selected on the server…

Ok I’m sure you are all in hysterics with the questions I’ve just asked!! I’ve only just left University where they taught no NW, therefore I have spent what cash I had left to purchase a second hand copy of old NW4.11 and learn myself as that’s the area I wish to forge a career. Therefore any additional advice or appropriate urls would be fantastic!! Thanks guys

Hi !
First type on your console command: config
after it you have to see any network card with it's name, type of ethernet frame and binded protocol with network number.

If you see only server internal network number and card name with ethernet frame but without protocol and network number, you can't login to server.
Check your autoexec.ncf and try to find this lines for example:

LOAD 3C90X.LAN SLOT=5 FRAME=ETHERNET_802.3 NAME=NET_CARD
BIND IPX TO NET_CARD NET=1

or

LOAD 3C90X.LAN SLOT=5 FRAME=ETHERNET_802.2 NAME=NET_CARD
BIND IPX TO NET_CARD NET=2

or maybe you can use inetcfg, simple on your console write the command:

LOAD INETCFG

it's load an interface that have some sections like BOARDS, PROTOCOLS, BINDINGS ,... in boards check that you see your netcard, in protocol check that IPX is enabled, in bindings check that you have any IPX frame binded to netcard, leave inetcfg and restart server

Second uninstall client 4.90 (because it works bad) and install client 4.83Sp2e but with custom installation where you can choice IPX only.

If you have a question leave any information (especialy: content of your autoexec.ncf)

Macfoxx

Thanks Mac, I viewed the CONFIG file and discovered that the NIC was not assigned to any protocol stacks. Yep, I’d forget to assign a frame to the NIC. I’ve unloaded the driver for the NIC and reloaded it with a frame assigned. The config file looks about right.

I’m just about to download client 4.83Sp2e as you recommended, and test the connection. I’ll keep you posted!!
Again thanks Macfoxx

New Server, now is the perfect time to upgrade to latest service pack. For Netware 4.11 it's 9 or 9a I believe.

Thanks....
