I'm setting up a relatively simple network for a small middle school (8 to 12 PCs) and hope I can get some good advice here.
Since each student does not have his own PC I have to make it so that no matter which PC they log into they will have their docs and settings. I'm thinking Roaming Profiles here. All the client PCs are running XP Pro. I setup a Win2k seerver and promoted it to Domain Controller activating Active Directory. The server has 2 NICs with ICS and the client PCs are able to get online thru the server. However when I try to get the client PCs to join the domain I get this error:
The following error occurred when DNS was queried for the service location (SRV) resource record used to locate a domain controller for domain server.alsion.org:
The error was: "DNS name does not exist."
(error code 0x0000232B RCODE_NAME_ERROR)
The query was for the SRV record for _ldap._tcp.dc._msdcs.server.alsion.org
Common causes of this error include the following:
- The DNS SRV record is not registered in DNS.
- One or more of the following zones do not include delegation to its child zone:
server.alsion.org
alsion.org
org
. (the root zone)
After searching around online I tried enabling NTBios on the client PC, no help. I made sure the client PCs didn't have any firewalls on. My suspicion is a DNS problem. When i run ipconfig on the clients they have the old Connection Specific DNS of attbi.com. I put the server's internal NIC's IP address in the DNS address under TCP/IP props but it didn't change anything. Not sure if this is the source or how to fix it.
I'm also curious if the computers need to be physically connected this way in order for the domain controller to work. Could the server just be another PC on the same switch? I realize that ICS wouldn't work but I can use a router for that. Or if I do continue to use the server for ICS, how can I use it for content filtering on the client PCs? Obviously parents don't want their kids being able to access porn sites.
Thanks much in advance!
