hello
in Premiere 6 I can't import AVI format movies and I really need to for what I am doing

is there any way i can change it so that i can import them?

thanks in advance
ciao

What is the exact error?

Do you have all the needed codecs installed?

okay here's the error message, it doesn't say anything about it being an error because it's avi but it pretty much has to be as it happens to every avi file and no other types.

Unable to open that file.
File is either damaged, an unsupported type, locked or in use by another application.

File Path: C:\KaZaA\My Shared Folder\file185.avi

Kaza... hehe, yeah okay, downloading stuff from Kaza...

its divx 90% of the time or an imcomplete file...

hey

but divX works and i can open all videos in windows movie maker but not Premiere?

ciao

Depending on the avi, the avi could have been done in earier version of DIVX (the hacked version of MS's Mpeg 4 stream) and Premiere never handled that one correctly.

Best to download Virtua Dub ( ) and convert the avi stream to whatever other codec you can use ( Indeo, uncompresed ) to import into Premiere.

thx lol

i already have virtualdub as well but can't compress the files down to a small file size? do you know how?

sorry about this, im an extreme extreme newb and know basically nothing about making videos yet except how to put music videos and cut clips in half with that... cutting tool

thanks in advance
ciao

Well, you'll do your compression in Adobe once you have a video stream you can work with. As it stands, your best bet is to compress using a different Codec in VDub and then import that into Premiere, then using premiere along with any other items you need to do, render out your final avi in the compression of choice.

I dont know what your perogative on Quality is, so Im assuming that you dont really care what the final outcome is as far as quality goes. What are you planning to do with the AVI. Maybe a much more clearer idea of what you want as an end product can determine the best way to handle the malformed DIVX file.

hey again

all my video stuff is all stuffing up since i installed then uninstalled Windows XP Profesional and now when i got ME back on it put on an old version of windows media player so now i have to update windows media player to get virtualDub working..
its a long process but i hope that eventually i will get there, lol

ciao

You'll get there, but My suggestion is to dump Win ME and go with Win 2k or stay with Win XP. Win ME is by far the most buggiest, over bloated OS since Win 98. I've had more problems with Video editing and capturing and conversion programs with Win ME than I care to discuss and all of htem went away when I started to work with Win Xp and Win 2k.

Anyway, post here should you need answers. I love vdub to death as its made life simpler for me when handling multiple video files with different properties.
