I've got a Hewlett-Packard zt1131s and I tryed to uninstall XP. This is how I did it:

FDISK - Delete all partitions, and add 1 20 GB harddrive (Primary DOS)

Format c:

Then I tryed both ME and 98 by putting in the CD and bootdisk and running the setup.

All went well untill it went to boot up into windows. I said a file was missing. I didnt notice it the first time but the second time during format it flashed a message (In which text) then continued. Some one said that HP and Microscum erm I mean Microsoft have make a chip that only allows XP and maby 2k to be run on HP laptops.

Any ideas on how to get another OS on their and does anyone known if 2k will work?

Whenever I wipe out an OS and re-install a different one, I would always run FDISK /MBR at the prompt to clear out the Master Boot Record. Then I would format the hd with Format c: /s, copy cd rom driver (autoexec.bat and config.sys), start that up and then copy Win 98's CAB files (or all in the WIN98 folder on the CD), reboot the pc and then install WIN98 from the HD.

There should be no reason you can't run 98 off the pc (I wouldn't think anyway). BUT...whatever you do, do NOT install ME...that OS is CRAP!

Whats wrong with ME? I use it on 4 other systems and have no probs with it?
