Using Exchange 2003 on Server 2003. Sending and receiving email internally works fine. Sending mail to anywhere outside works fine. Incoming mail from another exchange server works fine. Incoming mail from other places, such as Yahoo is not received. I sent an email from Yahoo and the next day I get a failure notice saying the connection died. I turned on logging and I can see the attempt to send the mail. I used telnet to try and send a mail manually. When I use the "mail to" command, I keep getting the message, "501 5.5.4 Invalid Address" I am using a valid address and have tried several times with the same result. I am at a loss on what to do next to troubleshoot this.

Any help would be appreciated.

Take a visit to and do a RDNS lookup on your IP address. You probably will find an error that you are not getting reverse IP resolution.

Have you tried sending TO the Yahoo address? Does that just hang out in your outgoing Queue?

I hope you find this post helpful.

I checked the reverse dns and all is fine. We can recieve some outside mail but most is not. When I check the log, I see the mail to and rcpt to commands but no data command. Those that are recieved have the data command in the log.

I was unable to use telnet to send mail from the outside. Then I turned off the mail guard feature of the pix and now I can. Seems that I should have been able to send mail manually without turning off the mail guard.

The one thing I did notice in sending mail manually was after using the data command, sometimes it would not recognize the period by itself to end data input. It was just hung out there. I am wondering if this is why outside source are not sending completely. If so, what could cause that?

I think you need to first figure out where the real problem is. Disable anythign that could be blocking it at the firewall and run a full range of tests again. Make sure that all port 25 traffic is not getting blocked.

I hope you find this post helpful.

Mark
