can't get passed dns setup

I am using the ALS book form Microsoft.
Windows 2000 Server. It came w/120 day server license.

i have tried to setup win 2000 server, as a stand alone,on a pc.
more than enough mem, etc.

I get all the way through the setup but when i try to join the domain it keeps saying no such domain. if i ping wwtc01(server name) it finds it but comes back w/127.0.01 which can't be used. it does the same for

http://wwwtcrm209.local.

if i try 10.1.1.10 it wil say no reply.

I have it set this way:
ip 10.1.1.10
sub 255.0.0.0
dns 10.1.1.10

I have forward and backward lookup setup.

i need this to work for a class that i am teaching this summer. all students will be using the same software.

can anyone help?

i am so frustrated. if possible could you go step bey step.
maybe i have missed something.

This server is the start of a classroom network.

I am trying to go through all the labs that the students will be using. This way i hopefully will avoid many problems for the students and myself.

122455, I'd suggest you find someone local to you who's done this before. You sound to me like you are trying to figure out simultaneously

* How your gonna be connected to the rest of campus
* How your gonna set up the internal classroom network
* How to set up the machine to accomplish these two.

Its not simple, its kinda tough, and for the people here to properly help troubleshoot the problems you are having requires them to have all of the desired/existing information.

Get someone local. Heck, you're at a univeristy. I know that there are kids there who can help you out.

I will not be hookup w/the outside world.

This is strictly a lab setup.

My server id the PDC the rest wil start out as bdc's and after while will be promoted (each for awhile)

I finally did get the setup to work. As Hewissa had said.

Now all is fine. I thank all of you for your help and patience. What Hewissa stated should be stated in the ALS book and also on MS' site. It would have stopped much of the confusion.
