cant get msg to work

Ive been searching but can not find any solutions that work. Vista did away with Net Send and now the solution is to use msg, but I can not get msg to work. I have tried dozens of examples to simply send a message to another user or computer on the same domain, but I only get errors --
error 5 getting session names, or error 1722 getting session names. The examples are all simple and it doesnt look like this is rocket science but none of the examples work. Both pcs are running vista enterprise, on the same domain, firewalls off.. the machines can ping each other, share files, do anything apparently but receive messages from the msg command. What am I missing here? Can somebody point me in the right direction?

can you send a message to yourself? try msg 1 test. What di you get?
