Hello,

I am very frustrated. I have Windows 2000 and Office 2000 both updated with the most current Service packs. I don't recall what triggered this issue but I suddenly couldn't retrieve my mail via Outlook. It will appear as if it is counting down the messages that it is recieving, but when it receives them all, it gives me 2 errors, 1 about there being problems with the server and 1 saying that an "unknown error has occured" and to shut down.

Here is what I have done. I have repaired my office installation, I have confirmed that I can retrieve my messages via the internet and via Outlook Express, I have deleted and re-added my account properties, and I have tried a fix that is mentioned in a microsoft.com artical that sounded very close to my issue.
NOTHING WORKED! :)

I am not sure what else to do. Has anyone had a similar issue? I would be happy to send the screen shot to anyone who thinks they may be able to figure it out. And I will owe you!!!!!

Thanks

Dawn

Exact errors, Dawn?

I might not get to look at it until tomorrow night, so if someone else offers, send it to them too!

1 sounds like Server Side Error, maybe your account problem...

you can set your exchange server in outlook express and try whether it can read or receive.

In case there is no problem in outlook express, i think that is client, outlook problem. but sounds like Server side error.

doldol, if you read my post again you will see that I already tried getting through OE and it does work. It is certainly an Outlook issue, but what the issue is or how to fix, I am stumped. Dawn

Can you also email me the error?

Ok.
I'm at a loss, Dawn.
Perhaps you can try running just the Outlook detect and repair from its help menu.
If that doesn't work, with Outlook closed, MOVE your PST file and open it again--let it create a new one. I think that's all you'll have to do to try it with a new PST. I mean, the PST isn't shared by OE and OL, so that's one unique thing to OL.

I'm pretty sure you have timeout settings in the accounts, set them higher.

Geeze, I just don't know. I'll ask my *OL buddy* today.

Well, I stumped Dreamboat!!! (must be the first time) LOL, thanks for trying. I have tried the time out settings but not the pst thing, so I will try that. I also already tried the detect and repair from the help menu. Dang!!!

Dawn

doldol, I am not sure. I finally deleted the account and moved all of my messages to Outlook Express.

Dreamboat, is the inbox repair tool different from the detect and repair? How do I access that?

thanks to you both,

Dawn

I would have asked your ISP to archive your existing mail, delete your mailbox on the server and recreate it. It is entirely possible that your mailbox is/was corrupt. If your mail profile is set up correctly on your local machine and you are able to ping/connect to the exchange server at your isp and able to actually retrieve email then that tells me that nothing is causing the problem from your side.

pps check also if you run any sort of firewall software (ie third party stuff like norton firewall etc..if you do, try disabling it before retrieve your email again.

hope this helps :)

Shad--I thought of that too, but if it's bad on the server, then why does OE work? Doesn't make sense. It's not like she's on an exchange server.

Dawn--In the help file LOL I have XP! Check your help file:

About the Inbox repair tool
If you can't open your Personal Folders file (.pst) or Offline Folder file (.ost) file, or you suspect that your .pst or .ost data file is corrupt, you can use Scanpst.exe, the Inbox repair tool, to diagnose and repair errors in the file. Scanpst.exe scans only the .pst or.ost file, making sure that the file structure is intact. It doesn't scan your mailbox on the Microsoft Exchange server.

Scanpst.exe is installed when you install Microsoft Outlook and is located at:

drive:\Program Files\Common Files\System\Mapi\1033
For detailed information about running the tool, see the Help file, Scanpst.hlp, at the same location.

Note Use Scanost.exe, the .ost integrity check tool, if you get error messages when you synchronize your .ost file with the Exchange server.

If thats the case it will more than likely be a corrupted local mail profile / transport as Outlook Express doesn't use mail profiles as such... I would delete your mail profile, uninstall Outlook completely then reboot your machine, reinstall Outlook and recreate your mail profile, this will reinstall the exchange transport system that is used to communicate with the server...

what a headache I have, LOL. I will try your ideas and get back in a couple of days, I need a break from this :)

Thank you,

Dawn

P.S. Dreamboat, my pst is under a MB. Especially now that all of the emails are in Outlook Express :)

Dawn,

Can you try to retrieve or do the same action to make the Error? and catch the exact time when the error happened.

After having the error happened, please go to Administrative Tools -> Event Viewr -> Application.

And then, please find the Event Viewer(a 'time' could be a sign) and send me a picture of the event.

I think it is a little hard which Event viewer is the exact one, so you can catch 3-4 event viewers around the time.

Hi there Doldol....ok, it is fixed and I don't know how. Apperently it was one of the problems that got solved by creating a new user account in Win2000 and starting Outlook from that account. So, I guess the problem wasn't really "solved" but I found an acceptable work around. :)

Thanks for all your help.
