cant find the boot.ini file in windows 2000 1

I am trying to create a logical partition in windows 2000 server and it says that i must change the partition number in the boot.ini file. I have tried to find boot.ini but cannot find it. I was told to show all files and folders and that there would be a %systemroot% folder and that boot.ini would be in that folder but after i have shown all files and folders i cannot find the %systemroot% folder. Where is the boot.ini file and how can i get to it?

Boot.ini will not be visible if the folder setting "Hide protected operating system files" is checked, which it will be by default.

Uncheck it and search again.

Hmm well im new to win2k pro, just did the identical as you and cannot find the boot.ini aswell. Perhaps the boot.ini is now the autoexec but thats just a guess...all i have in my root is autoexec and config.sys...

I aswell thought there would be a boot.ini in there...
Oh well someone should solve this very soon...

At the risk of repeating what has already been stated:
In Explorer go to :

Tools > Folder Options > View

Press the option for "Show hidden files and folders"
Uncheck the option "Hide protected operating system files (Recommended)"

Apply > OK

Look in C:\

boot.ini has to be there. 'Cause you are not going to run without it.

Try going to a command prompt, make sure you are at the %systemroot% and type this:

attrib -s -h -r boot.ini

Hit enter. Then try typing:

dir boot.ini

Is your system dual-boot? If so, and you installed w2k Server over an earlier version of Windows, then the boot.ini file may be in the root of another drive.
BTW, I am surprised to hear that win2k is asking you to make manual amendments to the boot.ini file in the first place - creating logical drives is easily done using the Disk Management utility under Admin Tools>Computer Management (assuming the entire hard drive hasn't been formatted already). If you amend the boot.ini file successfully, then the system may not restart at all - it would be a good idea to copy the file to a bootable floppy to begin with in case it needs to be restored.
