Can't Find Domain on Second DC

We have a small network, and we don't use a real DNS name. The first domain controller works fine. However, when I go to set up a second controller, I can't seem to get past the error that it can't find the DNS server. If I hit the "browse" button, the domain shows up, but when I select it and click next, it gives the same error.

Anyone know how I can get past this? Do we absolutely need to set the original controller up with a "something.com" DNS address?

Any help would be MUCH appreciated!

yes, the server attempting to be dcpromo'd will need to know about a vaild DNS server. w2k / 2k3 are base around the DNS server. nothing works without it.

you can name your domain pretty much anything, but consideration should be exercised because you will not want to attempt a rename once it is up and running (only available in 2003)

If I start a domain as domain.local, how would I need to set up the DNS settings to be able to add the second crontroller?

if you are building a new domain, then just follow the wizard and when prompted, choose domain.local as the DNS name for the domain. once completed, clients will logon as clientname@domain.local...

DNS will create SRV records for the DC's and DNS servers, ect.
before running DCPROMO on the second box, make sure to put the DNS server address in the tcp/ip config. (also an address on the local segment). the promo should be work as expected and then a reboot will be necessary. choose active directory integrated DNS servers if installing DNS on the 2nd DC. (this is a good idea )

I've added the IP address of the first domain controller to the DNS Servers in the TCP/IP settings. However, the same problem occurs during DCPROMO.

"The domain "domain.local" cannot be contacted. Ensure that the DNS domain name is typed correctly.

Problem solved! Some of the required setting for DNS were missing. I ran the netdiag /fix thing, and it seems to be installing now! Thanks for the suggestions!
