I have Windows 2000 running Office 2000 and I have to do File, exit to exit excel. The cross in the top right corner is either greyed out or when not greyed out doesn't work. Has anyone any ideas.
This was a problem for me for the longest time. I finally stumbled across the answer, I hope. If you have Novell Groupwise as your E-Mail client, the problem may be solved as follows. Please note, if this is a corporate machine, please be sure to consult with your system administrator first.
From Novell Support:
Solution Using integrations, "System Close" (X) in Microsoft Word is grayed out
Solution ID : 1.0.535750.1867084
This is working as designed
If you close Microsoft Word using "System Close" ODMA will not check the document back into the library
You can get these buttons back by disabling GroupWise integrations and deleting (not just renaming) the GWXL97.XLA file in the XLSTART directory (under Microsoft Office).
Sure hope this helps!

It sounds like Groupwise is still integrated into your Excel. Haveing worked with Groupwise before, I know that it never worked properly on later versions of Excel. The next thing to try is a re-install of Groupwise, being sure to uncheck the integration with Office (Word and Excel are the only two, as I recall) and going back and being sure that the GWXL97.XLA didn't re-install itself.
Hope that helps.

Step 1: Disable integrations
Step 2: Delete GWXL97.XLA or GWXLUS.XLA
Step 3: In Excel reset worksheet menu bar by going to View|Toolbars|Customize tehn select "worksheet Menu Bar" and hit reset. You might also have to reset the standard toolbar.
