Win XP @ the command propmt I can view the dir listing c:\ but I can't copy them to the a:\ drive. I get the error file not found but the dir command lists them using the /as switch. Explorer doesn't list them. I remember reading something about how windows handles these files but I can't remember where or what it said. I just need to copy them for a boot disk. Any help is appreciated. I want to know how to do this under XP.

sys and ini files are hidden by default by the operating system... you can go into folder options and choose to show all files, then you will be able to find them in the explorer or command prompt... debonairOne

Under explorer with the option show hidden and system files checked it doesn't show them and under the command prompt it shows them but I can't copy them. I know the files I need I just can't copy them under either. I know how to use the copy command.

At the command prompt:
TYPE attrib *.sys and record the details of what is displayed. TYPE attrib *.ini and record the details of what is displayed.
TYPE attrib -r -s -h *.sys
TYPE attrib -r -s -h *.ini
TYPE copy *.sys a:
TYPE copy *.ini a:
Now for the fun part, putting the files back the way you found them. From the stuff you recorded earlier, there should be letters in front of the files names (ie: SHR) you need to replace them.
Example MSDOS.SYS should have SHR in front so you type attrib +s +h +r msdos.sys
CONFIG.SYS should have only H in front so you type attrib +h msdos.sys
Do for all.

I finally found out why explorer would not display the files. Under folder options | view. I did not have the check box display the contents of system checked. Now it displays them but now I don't need them so I guess I will go back and uncheck the little box thingy.
