I am trying to copy a folder with tons of subfolders and files from an nt 4 server to a w2k server in the same domain and I keep getting an error that says.

"cannot copy filename. Access is denied. Make sure the disk is not full or write-protected and that the file is not currently in use."

I have been copying other folders and files between these two servers with no problem. I have taken ownership, then rebooted, then changed security to include administrator. Not sure what else to do.

I've run into this before and my solution was to:

1) make sure you have administrator permission to the main folder and all sub-folders on both machines.

2) create a new folder on the W2K with the same name as the main folder on the NT4.

3) copy all folders inside the main on the NT4 to the new main on the W2K

This procedure has worked for me in the past.

David Tracy

P.S.

Do these two servers have a trust relationship?

David.

DTracy - thanks for responding. Your first response is exactly how I set it up. As far as a trust relationship, they are both in the same domain and I have been copying other folders to the new server with no problem. It is just this one folder that is giving me a nightmare. It belongs to a group with a pretty High security clearence and so it actually had some of the subdirectories denying permissions to the administrators group. I changed that but still nothing.

Did you click on the inherit permissions box in order to change all the permissions in the entire folder tree?

Sorry, there is a word for this procedure and I can't think of it right now.

David

DTracy - Yes did all that and still nothing. All of a sudden I tried copying randam other stuff to that same folder on the other server and it wouldn't go either. Bottom line is I created another folder on the server I was copying to and got it done. I don't know what was wrong with the original folder but I have way too much to do to spend too much time on going back and trying to figure out why the first one didn't work. Thanks for all of your responses, I'm golden now.

I had this problem recently while performing a file server upgrade. I used robocopy to perform the copy and logged everything to a file. I found out that some users who had full control of directories/files had removed the administrators group from the respective ACLs. It took a few days to reconcile all the files ACLs (by taking ownership)
