Can't connect to SQL Server over VPN

I have a VPN setup and would like to run an application that uses our SQL Server 2005 database. I can get to the server itself and navigate around the directories fine. I am wondering if there is a permission or setting I need on the SQL Server to allow access to the database over vpn.

Sorry I am on windows xp pro sp2

And the sql server 2005 is on Windows server 2003
