Can't change the read only attribute

When i try to change the read only attribute for any subfolder on C:\ it always changes back to a "forced" state.
When you click on the checkbox of the read only attribute there are apparently 3 states: ON, OFF and a forced?? state.
Does anyone know where this "third" state comes from? It's a clean installation connected on a network.

I've found an article on the microsoft support site (

In short: a share has default read only rights...
So i stoped sharing my C:\ and stoped the Server service
But i stil can't manage to change the read only attribute to OFF or ON!!!!

I'm out of idea's... does anyone have a suggestion?

For the reason that it happens I cannot help, however all folders I have on any XP machine show as Read-Only when you right click and select properties. However I have never had a problem writing files to any folders!!

Strange behaviour I know - but it doesn't seem to have any effect?

I understand that you're saying "it doesn't seem to have any effect" but...
strangely enough some of our users seem to have troubles with removing files in their attach folder. This folder is on a server but the properties are comparable to the C - drive on you're local system.

I also tried the solution described in the knowledgebase article you've posted, but without succes.

So i'm still searching for a solution...

This sounds like a rights issue. The file has its own attributes but the user has only specific rights to it. So even if the file attribute were not read only if the user only had read rights to it it would be "forced". Go into the advanced security page and check what the user rights are.
