Have you tried with a CD-RW, formatted as a rewritable divice, if it works correctly in this mode? You can also use the CD-RW to do tests as a normal CD.

What is your system? Operating system, CPU speed?

Have you tried sutting down all unneeded applications, inculding the ones running inbackground?

Hi! felixc... my OS is Windows 2000 and i have a pentuim 3 800 MHz... the problem started today, ii was burning fine yesterday.. i'm using nero burning rom, you thik that maybe if i change to an other burning software i might be able to burn?. Oh and i don't have any CD-RW

when did this happen? what are the things you did (installed/tweaked/etc.) before this happen? maybe we can work things backward.

as a side not, i too had the same problem several months back. it turned out that my external cd writer won't burn any cd's if my anti-virus and personal firewall were both running. so what i did was disconnect my pc from the network and unloaded both apps. everything went smoothly from then on.

Hey torturedmind i think you've hit the jackpot!, yesterday i installed Norton Anitvirus 2005 and have my personal firewall running (both apps at the same time) i'll try to burn with out those apps running....

I just (last week) had to restore from a back up image because Norton 2005 ^%%#'d up my system! The image put 2003 back in which works OK. The problem with 2003 is, last time I had a problem, Symantec said the only cure is to upgrade to the new version, as any version before 2004 is no longer supported (live update no longer works right - have to d/l signatures manually).

what did norton do?... you know i've heard that kapersky antivirus is a better antivirus than norton

try this;
Determine maximum speed : FALSE (change to TRUE)
Simulate : FALSE (TRUE)
Write : TRUE
Finalize CD : FALSE (TRUE)

Disable the Nero AV plugin in Preferences >> General tab

The error;

is a common one - but may have diff fixes - BTW Keep using Nero, you'll just end up complicating things further

If installing Norton seems to have caused the problem it could simply be a case of not enough system resources to complete the burn procedure

Try switching off a few back ground processes from the task manager

If you ever upgrade to XP you can always use the cd burning option from there too if you get problems with Nero et al...

I asked if you tried shutting down every other application that you have running in your system. This is because all the background tasks do eat a lot of the CPU resources. With a Pentium 3 at 800MHz, Win2K is already a huge load on a PC. (WinXP would be worse) Norton is known to be a power hog, in addition to a lot of other problems. Internet link, antivirus, firewall, spyware. Turn them off before using your writer. These tasks are taking CPU instructions that take too long to execute concuirrently with the CD-ROM burning software, which needs some real-time performance.

I had a K6-550 with an old HP 4X burner and Win98. The only way to get it to burn properly was to remove all the background apps.

Over the years i've had so much trouble with Norton & Mcafee, and spent money on keeping them up to date. The most satisfactory Antivirus I've found is AVG and it's free. Coupled with Sygate personal firewall (also free) my system is stable and doesn't suffer anywhere near the number of incompatibilities that other commercial software did.

good combo there norty

hey you guys, i unistalled norton from my pc, and shut down every process in the background... and still no luck now i get an other error that says "coud not perform endtrack"... of curse i'm using the simulation mode, i'm not risking any more cd's.... but since last week i've noticed that my pc i very slow..... and now that i've unistalled norton i have 2 msn messenger in the task bar, internet explorer takes a lot of time to load a web page (and i have dsl)... so you think that maybe i have a virus?

Thanks!
