Hi all. I've inherited servers that I didn't set up and there's one annoying thing I can't figure out. At present when you try to browse the network for computers, only the servers (win2k, AD domain) show up. This becomes annoying when trying to deploy certain software like Ghost. I'm not sure if this is a issue on the way the servers are configured, the workstations (some win2k, some xp), or perhaps the cisco gear. If someone could point me in the right direction, I'd appreciate it.

David.

It says: There are no entries in the list. (which is true, the workstations don't have shares)

Also computer browser is disabled on all the workstations is that normal in a domain setup? I did notice that when I turned Computer Broswer to automatic on a machine, all the computers in that VLAN became visible to the entire network.

Facinating....

David.

If you disable the browser function in the workstations they will not be able to browse the network for name resolution and will not show up in the DNS listing because they do not browse! They could still connect to the servers if they are using a host file.

Try turning the browser function back on. Sound like someone tried using the no browse to stop internet access from the workstations. If that is the requirement, do it with a rule at the firewall instead. If you do not have a firewall and use the Internet, then you have bigger fish to fry first! :)

HTH,

David

They show up in the DNS just fine and we don't particularly want the workstations to be able to browse other computers, we want to be able to browse and see the workstations (from the server). And they don't have hostfiles pointing to the servers, hmmm. But if there's no reason not to run the Computer Browser service on the workstations, then I suppose that will solve the problem.
Thx.

David.
