i run across this dump win98
1.6GB of hd, p1 233MMX, 64MB of ram
251MB of defragged space for paging

it will boot to safe mode, but won't even get win98 screen to come up once i reboot it to standard mode

tried, disable a bunch of stuff under msconfig
tried, remove all sound card, modem
only left video card in

when it reboot, it stalled at cpu, icq screen (2nd screen)
hd light stayed on

any suggestion ?

Have you tried booting it up where you can step through everything that loads I cant remember what that is called but it is in the list where you pick safe mode, dos mode ect. after you start this loading step by step then you can see where it is erroring out. You said that it boots into safe mode so it should be a file that is loading that is causing the problem or a program. Then all you need to do is just not load that file and you should be in so you can correct the error. another thing you can try is checking how much space is used on the drive you might need to free up more hard drive space. I hope this helps

Try booting with a "boot log" and then boot again normally. The log file should tell you where it is hanging up. Then try the step by step boot, loading drivers one at a time.

You could always boot to Safe Mode and selectively remove devices, and let Windows detect them again. May have a corrupt driver. You do have a Windows CD and/or driver files handy?

ya i tried step by step, and it hang every time at mouse
either yes or no, still hang,
going to try your boot.log

First of all....you may have an ICQ transmitted nasty virus.....no?....I'm referring to what you say at the end of that first post...."icq screen (second screen)"......

Concerning Bootlog.txt......
Check for an outdated or damaged VxD by examining Bootlog.txt, and then do the following:
If it is in the Windows System\Iosubsys directory, rename it.
If it has a .386 filename extension, examine the [386Enh] section of System.ini and remark out its lines.
When renaming VxDs, be sure to change the .vxd extension.
Windows 98 loads all files in the Iosubsys subdirectory that have a .vxd extension.
If it is in Vmm32.vxd, check the \Windows System\Vmm32 directory for a Vmm32 file, and rename or move it.

For example, if you see an entry such as
DynamicInitDevice=PPPMAC but there is no matching entry such as
DynamicInitSuccess=PPPMAC, that VxD failed to load.
If a driver in the Windows System\Iosubsys directory stalls when it is being initialized, you can sometimes successfully start the system by renaming that file.

Secondly......When you say " I tried to disable alot of stuff under MsConfig".....
Did you check off this box in the Advanced part of the General Tab......
-VGA 640 x 480 x 16
Forces the display to use the industry-standard VGA mode. If the machine is not booting, and this setting allows the machine to boot successfully, then this could indicate a video-related problem

Reboot in safe mode, change paging size at max. double as your RAM is (128MB)or check box (let windows do that for You)also try to uninstall most recently installed programs, backward step by step. Safe mode start windows with minimum of drivers that point (I think) that You have no enough resources for normal boot.
p.s also, run antivirus in safe mode,to be sure that Your machine is clean.

thanks for all the help
it was my friend's machine, who knows what was install lately
all i know is, even if i boot to safe mode, the hd was going crazy, so must be a lot of crap installed and remove

i told her, must be a fresh re-install from scratch, i am not going to waste any more time, i tried with all your suggestion, usually the VXD one would fix it, in this case, no go
