I am having an issue where I can't boot up at all. Not even the power supply fans come on (power supply is good - read below). All I get is a faint flicker of light from the on switch when I press the button but it fades immediately. The RAM light (to tell you not to pull out ram with power applied) stays on though...No ps fans, no cpu fan, no case fans.

I am building this computer with all new equipment.
Power Supply: PC Power and Cooling 510 watt.
CPU: AMD 64bit 3.2Ghz processor
RAM: 2 x 512mb Kingston Platinum chips
Motherboard: Gigabyte K8N Pro (nForce3 chipset)
Harddrive: used from other computer but not relevent as I can't even get to BIOS.

I purchased another gigabyte motherboard and more ram (to switch out) and still doesn't work. I tested the Power Supply in another system and it works in that system and I also purchased another power supply and hooked it up to the new computer and it still doesn't boot up.
I shipped the AMD chip back to AMD and they were able to get it to work!
I have NO idea what's up here.

The AMD people say it could be the BIOS needs updating to newest (12/03) BIOS but how can I flash BIOS if I can't start up computer?

Thanks in advance!
Justin

Blab bla blablablabla.....

Check your fanspeed, most Mobo's won't start up if the Fan is not spinning at sufficient RPM's, try a new fan...

Hope this helps

Another suggestion is to remove the motherboard from the case, still connected to the PSU and try to power. It could be a case shorting problem which I find all too common these days. If it is, I would suggest replacing the case.

Bummer but neither of these suggestions worked. I am just planning on trying another motherboard (like Asus). Thanks for the tips though.

You must go the bare bone route first.
It could be a damaged component preventing boot.
Dead shorts in the hard drive or CDrom are common and are usually caused by a bad PSU.
Bare bones means: Motherboard with CPU, heatsink/fan, PSU, 1 stick of memory, and a graphics card.
place the motherboard on the motherboard box in such a way that the locating bracket on the graphics card goes over the edge of the box.
Clear cmos or remove battery for a few mins.
Momentarily touch the pwr (power terminals) with a small flat blade screwdriver.
It should post.
I suspect you have a motherboard "standoff" in the wrong place or a dead short in either a CDrom or HDD.

Thank you for your tip. I tried that and no luck. I went and bought an Asus MB and "presto", it worked. I have to assume that something with the Gigabyte MB just wasn't liking something. It would be really hard to believe if 2 MBs in a row of the same type would be bad - though theoretically it could happen.
I think it may have something to do with the newer nForce3 chipset. Gigabyte has it but Asus is using a VIA chipset which is more standard.???
Anyways I am now writing this from my new, smokin' fast AMD 64bit 3.2Ghz computer! Finally!

Thanks again to all of you who posted tips. I learned a lot that I never would have tried to do on my own!
