i have recently install a windows 2000 server but can not connect the workstations to the active directory .i tried to ping the ip address of the work stations but got no packets back any ideas.

Have you joined the workstations to the domain. If you did, then there should be connectivity between the workstations and the server. However, I will suggest you first check your hardwares first.Let us know if you have not joined the workstations to the domain and if you need help I think there are alot of us to help

If you can't ping by IP Address, your problem is not Active Directory related. You are going to have to check that all hardware, (NICS, Cables, Switches) is working. Are these all on the same subnet or are they seperated by a router? Matbe give us a little more on your layout.

Make sure that primary DNS for each workstation is pointed to the DC running DNS. As long as you can ping the DC and DNS is pointed to the DC you should have no problems joining to the domain. If you still do then you need to heed pgagliardo's post and make sure that they are on the same subnet... (or a subnet that has been appropriately routed to talk with the subnet that the DC is on.) Make sure internal firewall's are off as well.
