Hello all,

I have a slightly perplexing question.

We are currently running Exchange Server 5.5 with Outlook 2000 (Corporate Workgroup Installs) clients on our network.

Whenever someone tries to send an Email to a Distribution List, I was under the understanding that if you double clicked on the DL you could see who the members of it were so you knew who would be receiving the email. When you click on the Modify Members button you get an error saying "The distribution List could not be displayed. The operation failed".

I have no clue what I need to do to be able to view members of the Dl.

We recently ran Forest Prep and Domain prep to prepare for an upgrade to Exchange 2003. Could that have something to do with it?

If anyone can help me solve this problem I would REALLY appreciate it!

Thanks to everyone!

Cheers.

Curtis

The Modify Members button is rioght beneath the Members List so I don't know what you mean by not seeing the members?

But you need rights to actually get to the modify members part.

Try rebooting, I heard this worked in another thread. Also, rdroske, he's not talking about seeing the members in Exchange administrator, he's talking about seeing the members of a DL in outlook.

Yeah I understood that, in my outlook (2000) a double click on a DL takes me to a properties page with a member list where the Modify members button is right beneath the list. Can't modify without permissions set on exchange but can see list.

Right, the problem is that he can't see the list. In fact no users with mailboxes on that exchange server can see members of the lists. he's not trying to modify the members only list them. The permissions are set to allow any one to list the members, but the lists all show up blank even though many members exist in each DL. When someone sends an email to the DL all the members receive the email, but the members of the DL can't be displayed in Outlook.

OK, so he sees the properties page and sees the box where the member list should be but it is empty.

That's clear now. I'll see what I can turn up.

On the exchange server, on the properties page for the dl there is an advanced tab. On that tab is a choice to hide member list from address book that is not checked by default but must be on his.

Hey guys,

Thanks for all your help! I have tried rebooting the Server and have double checked in Administrator to make sure that the DL Members are not hidden.

Both have not worked for me. You guys know what my problem is though. The DL Member's Dialog box doesn't populate with the members of the DL when you double click on it.

I will continue troubleshooting as well. Hopefully one of us can come up with something.

Thanks again for everything!

Couple of questions to ask here:

(1) What service pack level are you on for Exchange 55?
(2) You mentioned you ran forestprep and domainprep for Exchange2003. Do you also have an ADC agreement setup?
(3) When did this problem start occurring? Did it start happening right after the forestprep and domainprep?

1) SP4 and all the latest hotfixes
2) No ADC yet... We are planning on migrating to Exchange 2003 in the next few months and and DomainPrep and ForestPrep had to be done to help test the migration
3) We're not sure if it happened right after Forestprep and domainprep, but it was the only thing done recently. Also it very well could have happened right after. We only started noticing the problem a coulple days after, but we don't list the members of DLs from Outlook often enough to know exactly when it started happening.
