cannot send or recieve mail from internet

i can send and recieve local mail, but cannot recieve/send mail to/from internet users. basic installation, tried to figure out prob, but no go so far. also have dyndns setup, but no mx record <-- since it is not necessary. saw some stuff about the smtp connector, but since this is a soho setup I have read and do not believe this is necessary. that's about all the info i have. any help would be appreciated.
 
You have to have mx record.

If you can't send to the internet is sounds like you can't resolve DNS to them or port 25 is blocked. Dan

nope, port 25 is open, i can telnet to the port an recieve a reply from the smtp daemon. i have messed with the configuration of the server and now i can send e-mail to people on the internet, but cannot recieve mail from internet users. ah, how i miss linux and sendmail @ this point.
 
Fix your MX record to get mail. Dan

i have no mx record and you do not need an mx record.
 
well let me know how you expect internet users to know what the mail server is for your domain if you don't have a mx record Dan

When anyone sends you mail from outside their email server looks for a mx record for your email domain that is how it knows where to send the mail to. The mx record doesn't necessarily have to be your mail server. For instance my mx record points to our mail virus scan server. This causes people outside to send mail to our virus scan server which is configured to accept the mail scan it and then relay it to our email servers. You really should listen to xybertron on this. He knows his stuff.
 
When you get this resolved please be kind enough to let me know how you did it. I would like to know.
 
What is your domain name?

Do you ever see the message make it to the exchange server? Like with a trace? Or by turning on logging on the SMTP Virtual Server on the first tab?

When you connect to port 25 were you able to send the message and have it reach the store? If not what was the error? If you are able to it is the mx record issue. Dan

well, just to give an update: i created an mx record, but that did not cure the problem. i could still send mail but not recieve mail. i then created a new virtual server to test it with default settings, and i could send/recieve mail. it seems that on the default server i had set some connection and relay setting that where making the mail not be received by the server. also for giggles and to prove my point to the 2ndomen, i removed my mx record after getting the server to work correctly, and well as i stated it works without an mx record. sorry to say this but i really did not need your input and that is why i got mad. i have been using bind in linux for a few years, and knew that if you where just running a soho project you do not need an mx, you would only need to do that if you wanted the mail to go to a certain server on a network that had more than one server.
