I am using Outlook express over a modem dial-up. I have set up the account as an IMAP client rather than POP3 because I want to leave the mail on the server and I only want to download the headers. I have synchronized the folders successfully and am receiving all my new mail and can see old mail. I get an error when I try and send mail. I get a smtp error, 0x800ccc0e. I have looked this up and it refers to MSN connection. I am using an Earthlink dial-up. I don't understand, why I can receive and not send. Thanks in advance.

Can you give the whole error message you are receiving when you try to send. Some possiblities is an incorrect port number is entered, you have SSL selected when it is not required or possibly it could be your anti virus software. joegz

The entire message is as follows:

The connection to the server has failed. Account: '<account name>', Server: '<SMTP server name>', Protocol: SMTP, Port: 25, Secure (SSL): No, Socket Error: 10051, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E

I do not have the SSL checked and I am running Norton 2000. Outgoing SMTP is set to port 25 and incoming imap is port 143.

Thanks in advance.

Hmmm....I can only of think of two possibilities.

You do not have the outgoing SMTP server name set to mail.earthlink.net for the account. Or you do have the outgoing SMTP server set correctly but you are dialed into another network and not Earthlink's network. In the latter case check the access number you are dialing.

You can be dialed into any ISP\network and receive your message from Earthlink with no problem but to use the outgoing SMTP server for Earthlink you have to be dialed into their network. joegz

What I guess I don't understand is that this is my own mail server. I have an internal mail server and my employee that is having this problem is trying to get thier company mail from home. We are only using Earthlink as an ISP. Do I need to still have use their smtp server? I was able to get the Outlook Express account 100% working for this user from a cable modem, but she has this problem from her dial-up. Does this make sense? Thanks.

I am not certain how to answer your question on this network setup. I guess I would first check out if the client can ping and nslookup the server from the dial-up session? joegz

I have found the solution. As far as I have read Earthlink and AT&T now deny using any smtp server other than their own. They have moved from Internet access to an Internet Service, akin to AOL. That is why I could receive and not send, and get it working with no problem through the cable modem. Thanks for all the help.

you should now be able to use smtp.earthlink.net or mail.earthlink.net with authentication. use your full email address and password and you should be able to send on their servers from ANY isp/network...

hope this helps someone...

Parker, did this solve your problem? I'm having a similar problem with Outlook Express--sometimes I can send mail and sometimes I can't. At first I thought it was a problem with my web hosting company, but then I registered a new domain which is hosted by a different company and I have the same trouble. I'm going through a dial-up as well.

Has anyone ever heard of this happening?

I can't send messages with "Outlook Express". When I click
other e-mail addresses(e.g. "contact us" ) I get an error
message that "there is no short cut..." for this email.

It works with Netscape, though.

I cannot receive mail with outlook express, its there, I just can't get it. I have netzero.
Thanks,
wilkielen

I cannot send email with outlook express, I also have netzero.
The connection to the server has failed. Account: 'mail,netzero.net' Server: 'mail,netzero.net,
Protocol:SMTP, Port 25, Secure (SSL):No, Socket Error:10060.
Error number. ox800CCC0E

Are you sure about your Server name. It contains a "comma" instead of a "period." It should read something like:
mail.netzero.net

If this was just a typo then check your username and password.

Or try reformatting your HDD then re-installing Windows.

bluegroper, please, that's not helpfull If the solution is here, let us know it was helpful so others can benefit from it as too

i am having the same problem as gousseca.

The server does not support the required HTTP methods. Account: 'Hotmail', Server: ' Protocol: HTTPMail, Server Response: 'Method Not Allowed', Port: 0, Secure(SSL): No, Error Number: 0x800CCC35

the link you provided concerns identities in outlook. i only have one identity and have found that others who have been referenced this site found it unhelpful as well for this problem. the best answer i got so far is that it is a quirk and sooner or later it will fix itself. well it hasnt fixed itself yet.

anyone have any answers to this mystery?

thanks in advance.
