I have inherited a PCchips M598lmr. All the drivers are installed and I am running win98se.No problems with the existing setup using 1 hd and 1 cd-rom installed on the primary IDE channel. However when attempting to install another hd on the secondary ide, it is not detected. When checking the status in the device manager the message say's that I must allow the device in the BIOS.In the BIOS the device is set for auto detect, just as the primary is set,but it still doesn't detect and I continue to receive the same message in the device manager. Also get the same message in the system monitor when checking for problem devices.Any ideas out there?

Check what jr is talking about..there is a setting for ide controllers that usually say (both), (primary),(secondary), or (disable)

If the HD has not been formated yet, you'll get similar results as your described. Make sure the HD is Fdisk'ed and formatted.

Another point: This may seem really basic but check there is a power cable going to the hard drive as well as data.

thank you all,It was simply the setting in the bios that selects the choice of ide channels. In these BIOS it is in a folder called "Features Setup" and called "Onboard PCI IDE".
