I appreciate this has been answered many times, so please either redirect me or let me know the solution...

I have a windows 2000 server with AD, my clients are xp pro and windows 2000.

When I first install a new machine, you can see all the computers on the network. one machine I did on Monday can no longer do this...it just shows up blank.

On the Windows 2000 machines (Not all) it just says network is not accessable?? all the shared printers / files are working and everyone is logging to the domain with no problems, I cant understand why this happens on clients for no reason,

We are using dhcp. Is it WINS? I dont have much experience with WINS (Apart from what it stands for!)

Would appreciate this,

Thanks Guys

I think this is related to the IP Routing. You need to find out why this is enabled. Also just check Device Manager and verify what you have for Network Adapters.

OK Thanks Guys,

Net View works fine from the Server, it can see all machines.

Under Routing and Remote access, under IP Routing / General, there are 3 adapters, loopback which is fine (127.0.0.0) LAN which is fine (10.10.10.3) then another one called Internal 10.10.10.61, I havent seen this before, there is also references to 10.10.10.61 in the reverse lookup Zone?

I do have VPN installed and its been working fine over the past year...

I have a router 10.10.10.1, then a fixed IP Address for the only server 10.10.10.3 the rest of the IP`s are dished out by DHCP.

Under Device Mangager I have only 1 NIC.

Thanks

Zoeythecat,

Yes, you were right about IPX/SPX, it caused more problems than it was worth, I removed it and checked my DNS settings against what you said, i changed it slightly.

Now the PC`s can see the other computers, but 10.10.10.61 is still lurking around...Do you think it would be wise to delete this 'Internal adapter'? I wouldnt want to mess up my VPN service.

IP Routing is enabled for the server, this is correct isnt it? as my router is not on the server itself?

nslookup still doesnt work...

Thanks

Well if you look at your print screen of your IPCONFIG/All it lists all these IP Addresses you just mentioned. By having IP Routing setup this is causing your Browsing to break. I'm not sure how you installed your reverse lookup zone or why it is referencing 10.10.0.61. But when you install this the IP Address you should have used is for the 10.10.0.3 subnet (You enter the first 3 of 10.10.0). Check out this link to verify you added the Reverse Lookup Zone correctly:

Also to make sure your reverse lookup zone is working properly open up your DNS Manager, right click on your server name (underneath the DNS tab) and click on Properties. Go to the Monitoring tab and check both Querie tests and run a test. If the recursive query fails than your reverse lookup zone is not working. I don't believe this is a big deal to get this working.

Now to get your browsing working you may have to get another Domain Controller on your network to be the master browser. To do this you would need to do the following:

(1) On the 10.10.0.3 server disable the Computer Browser Service
(See the following article)

(2) You need to change 2 registry keys from the 191611 Microsoft article (read the very bottom of the article)to "False" and "No"

(Find another Windows 2000 Domain Controller that has a single NIC)
(1) Change the Registry entries from article 191611 to "True" and "Yes"
(2) Make sure to enable "Computer Browser" service
* Restart the computer *

Also install the Windows2000 Support tools from the Windows2000 Server CD. When this is installed you can go to a command prompt on your servers and do the following command:
browstat status . This verifies who is the Master Browser. If you do this step first I bet this will verify where the browsing is broke.

I know this is a lot to lay on you but when browsing is broke like this its very involved. Hope I am making sense. Read the Microsoft Article closely to understand how browsing gets broke.

Sponge,

Ignore my long response as I did not realize your computers can see the entire network now. I would recommend though installing the Windows2000 Support tools and running the browstat command to verify your browsing is working and also maybe uninstall and reinstall the reverse lookup zone after reference the link I sent you.

In regards to the IP Routing. I'm not too familiar with this and don't want to make any wrong recommendations. Perhaps someone else could pick up on this and assist you. The thing that concerns me is from your ipconfig/all lists the 10.10.0.61 and the DNS Server of 127.0.0.1 which is your loop back adapter. I'm not sure if this could be causing problems with your DNS. I would check your event viewer DNS logs to see if you can see any helpful event messages.

Zoey,

Yes, it seems my loopback adapter has become the default DNS server!!or something...

In the Event Log, it has many entries for "the redirector failed to determine the connection type" I tend to ignore this as its for the loopback adapter, but its appearing many times now...

I think were getting closer...I have to pop out for a few hours, Ill be back later...

thanks

So why would NSLOOKUP report no domain?

Im going to delete the internal adapter and see what happens!?

If it all goes wrong, Ill just start from scratch, (I keep backups of everything)

Thankyou all, especially zoeythecat, if your ever in the UK, look me up , I may have a consultancy job for you! if not a date...

James

Well you are welcome. Not sure if that resolved your problem though. And as an FYI......Zoeythecat is a male. My cat's name is Zoey....which is where the name came from. So a date would be out of the question. But if I am ever in the U.K maybe a consultants job would be nice. :}

So you have no WINS, for your browsing problem use Lmhosts file on the PC

For nslookup problem, you have to configure DNS Reverse Lookup Zone but if still not working then download netdiag.exe and run netdiag/fix then try nslookup and post what happen.

OK I downloaded Netdiag.exe, below is the Log, Underneath that is the message from nslookup.....

Thankyou, I would love to fix this! Please note my server IP Address should be 10.10.10.3!!!!

You may want to post your TCP/IP DNS settings as well from each server. Somewhere the DNS settings are not pointing to the 10.10.0.3 server.

I only have 1 server,

Here is the IPConfig from the server:

Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:

Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : icpsolar.icpsolar.co.uk
Description . . . . . . . . . . . : Intel 8255x-based PCI Ethernet Adapt

IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 10.10.10.3

Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 10.10.10.1
DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 10.10.10.3

PPP adapter RAS Server (Dial In) Interface:

Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
Description . . . . . . . . . . . : WAN (PPP/SLIP) Interface
Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 00-53-45-00-00-00
DHCP Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : No
IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 10.10.10.61
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.255
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . :
DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 127.0.0.1

The problem lies with the second PPP adapter,

I think it has become the default adapter for DNS, is there a way to change the default adapter? the subnet mask is 255.255.255.255?

Its getting annoying now!

I would think on the Ras Server you need to point the DNS Settings to 10.10.0.3 but not familiar with RAS servers. Perhaps someone else from here would know?

Ok try this, on your VPN connection properties/networking untick 'Client for Microsoft Networks' then reboot, run netdiag/fix again. We are in diff time zone I can't follow your post real time:) I'm in Singapore.

Mmmm, How? The server has been automatically configured as a RAS under Routing and Remote access.

There isnt a VPN Connection Properties. Perhaps you could tell me where to look?

Thanks

Sorry for the late reply but it seems that TT server was down(or anything) couple of days ago. My idea is how to get your DNS point to your NIC and not to PPP as default. Can you check in the network connection(right click 'My network Places'), how many interface do you have there? Definitely 1 is your NIC(LAN) but do you find something like Dial up or something, this is where I want you to untick 'Client for Microsoft Networks'(right click connection icon/properties/networking). Reboot and netdiag/fix again.

One more thing, check also in DNS snap-in, right click servername properties/interfaces(tab). How many ip address are there, 2 I suppose (10.10.10.3 and 10.10.10.61). Remove 10.10.10.61 and just reboot to make sure the changes applied.
