Network problem:

First a little description of my home network. I have 3 computers connected in a network via router. One of them is connected to the internet via a modem. I named these PC: Homeserver. On these PC Windows2000 Professional is installed. 2 other PC are connected to Homeserver via a router ( Speed Touch Pro). These computers are named respectevely: Joris and Koen. On the first one I installed Win XP Professional and on the second I’ve installed Win98.

I can ping to every of these machines to each other. So the LAN network is all right?!

In the folowing figure you see a setup of my homenetwork.

My network problem:
I can acces the internet on every PC, so the internet connecting seems all right.

Problem of Joris XP client:
1. On these PC I don’t see the client PC Koen
2. If I want to access the Homeserver PC I have to fill in a usename and a password.

Problem of Koen Win98 client:
1. If I want to access the Homeserver PC I have to fill in a password.
Folowing message appear: you must supply a password to make this connection

Problem of Homeserver Win2000 server:

So can someone help me with my problem?

Thanks in advance Joris

have you tried to create new user accounts with passwords
have you shared all pc's.
set up five pc's with xp + 2000 and 98 found i had to put them all in a workgroup or same domain for it to work.
also used ipx for speed. you can use workgroup and mshome
just quicker if you use one, hope this helps.

Turn off the software firewall in xp:

Right click Network Places, left click properties
Right click Local Area Connection, left click properties
click on advanced tab and uncheck "protect my computer....

Also some have said that turning on the "guest account" helps.

Xp will now see see your other PCs shared folders etc.

Hi spannerbender

On my Homeserver Win2000 I have several accounts. So do I also have to make these accounts on my XP and Win98 clients?
Is this what you wanted to say in your reply ? or am I wrong?

Thanks for the reply

1. On PC Koen make sure the File & Print Sharing is installed, that something is shared (even an empty folder), that the workgroup name is correct, and no firewall.
2. on the Homeserver PC, create an account that exactly matches the username and password of the user on PC Joris (username - not computer name).

Problem of Koen Win98 client:
1. If I want to access the Homeserver PC I have to fill in a password.

1. Create a user account on Homeserver that exactly matches the username and password of the Koen user.

1. same as Joris answer 1 (F&P sharing, something shared, workgroup, & no firewall on Koen).
