Need to change a registry setting but my changes are not saved. When I open the registry up again it has reverted back to the last setting (which is wrong). TIA for any help.

What registry setting is being changed? Is it malware/virus related, you think? If so, that would explain its recurrence. Of course, there could be other reasons as well... an installed program that's checking for that specific setting, and setting it to what it thinks is correct for one.

Try this:
[ol][li]Download Malwarebytes Antimalware, install, and scan with it to be sure of no malware (not that it's the only program, but if it doesn't find ANYTHING, then more than likely you're clean - no program is 100%, but this one is purty good.)[/li]
[li]Download Advanced System Care, install it, configure it, stop the initial scan that starts after install, and then hit the big "Care" button, Okaying any prompts. Most likely, you can ignore any other pop-up messages, just close them, including the security advisor. If you take a look and have any thing that sticks out to you from that, search about it, or ask questions about the specific item.[/li]
[li]For Windows XP, You can also try RegScrubXP - download, install, "program finds problems", then "fix all problems" - it's a really nice piece of software, I just hate they no longer support it.[/li]
[li]Reboot, make sure all is still well, and then.. Turn off system restore.... reboot... turn back on system restore, and set a new restore point.[/li]
[li]Check the registry entry again - see if it was already fixed, or if not, see if you can now fix it. I'm assuming you're 100% certain about what you're doing - otherwise, do some more searching on it to be sure it SHOULD be changed.[/li][/ol]

After all is said and done, report back with your progress.

Thanks for your reply. I have already run Malwarebytes, Norton, and Spybot several days ago as the computer in question did have a problem. Ran again yesterday and found nothing. As far as the registry change is concerned, I do know what I am doing. I am working on this particular change with tech support for a specific program. All the permissions seem to be in place also. I will take a look at RegScrubXP and see if that helps. I am afraid her profile has become corrupted. thanks again.

Yeah, well, I'm sure you know the procedure for replacing a corrupt profile for testing - it's pretty quick and painless usually, so I'd definitely give that a go as well.

Also, if it's for a specific product, you may end up just needing to uninstall, then reinstall.

Hmm, here's another thought - make aboslutely certain that the program in question (I'm assuming it's a program) is not running... if it is, kill any tasks/processes for said program. Then also make sure no registry protection programs are running. And THEN try the registry edit.

thanks for all the posts. I will make sure any processes associated with the program are stopped. I may have missed one. It is a computer that I am working on through logmein. Thanks again. I will keep you posted.

Thanks for all the help. I did some more tests and found out that it was just that particular key that I couldn't update but it was tied to the program that I was trying to run. I finally uninstalled and then reinstalled the program and then I was able to change the key. Thought I would letyou know the outcome.
