Cannot run Quark on a 'locked volume'?! 1

I'm having problems opening Quark 6 on Mac OSX. It comes up with the warning message "You cannot run QuarkXpress on a locked volume. [83]." And i don't know what this means! I've got it installed on the same machine but under a different user and it boots up no dramas there. Could this be my problem?!

Any suggestions greatly appreciated!

It might be to do with the multi-user nature of OSX and Quark 'thinking' you have installed more than once - therefore breaking the rules... as far as I am aware they did not entirely think this issue through

I believe this might be something that is addressed in the Quark installer. One version of Quark 6 that I tried asked if the installation was for 'one user' or 'multi-user'. Some people may mistake this as a question about licensing and choose 'one user', thinking they are avoiding some sort of message that tells them to buy more licenses.

...although other reports seem to indicate that Quark simply dropped the ball on understanding multi-user operating systems.

I just ran into the same problem tonight. I consider myself technically savvy and I'm stumped as to how to fix this problem. Did you find a solution? BTW, your's was the only hit I found when I googled a query about this problem. Quark, of course, had nothing in their knowledge base about this -- at least nothing I could find. I think this seems to be yet another good reason to switch to InDesign (and I'm a loyal 14 year Quark user).

This problem is answered on Quarks web-site at:

"If a user other than the one who activated QuarkXPress logs on and attempts to launch the application, the error message “QuarkXPress 6.0 cannot be run from a locked volume” displays. To avoid this problem, set the QuarkXPress permissions (File > Get Info > Ownership > Permissions) to share with other users after you install it."
Note: Set the permissions on the QuarkXpress folder not on the application file.
