Cannot resolve DNS 1

Recently on my Windows 2000 pro box, I am unable to pull up any web pages thur any browser. I have a LAN and both of my Linux boxes could still get out to the web, so I knew it wasnt the router or the cable modem.

So, I called my ISP's tech support and we worked thru it for an hour before I got transfered to 2nd level support. The tech support thinks it is something to do with the regedit file. I wish I would have remember what he had me delete, but it is under this path:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software

Anyway he had me delete a folder and reboot and I still wasn't able to get out to the web. He advised the ace in the hole for any problem for windows, 'Uninstall and reinstall.'

I think that my problem can be solved without doing this, I'm hoping, but I was wanting to get some other ideas before doing this.

Please advise.

can you ping ip addresses outside of your local LAN, google.com is 216.239.35.100. I would try to ping by both name and ip address, let me know what the results are.

What router are you using, are you using dhcp, and if not have you specified DNS setting in your network card properties?
You say "recently", does this mean it worked before?
Can you access the Linux boxes across the lan (to rule out network card failure)?
Regedit is a program for modifying the system registry, and I have yet to come across a network problem that requires you to make any changes using it.....
Uninstall, re-install still seems to be the most commonly quoted solution by under qualified technical support people.

I'm using a Linksys Router, and I don't think it is the problem, because I can't pull up the admin web page: 192.168.1.1. I am not using DHCP thru the router, I've assigned IPs to machines manually because I used to log in remotely for IP forwarding.

I have the standard 3COM NIC and I've never had to do anything to it other than plug and play. BUT, I didn't think about swapping out the NIC to see if that was the problem.

Unfortunally, I cannot access my Linux boxes across my LAN, I've upgraded my machines and SSH is not working and I've disabled telnet/ftp, but I may reinstall those to see if it works or not.

arg...I can't remember, cause I'm at work right now, but I think I could ping the other machines on the network.

Let me try the loopback address when I get home and I'll go from there.

just for grins, do an ipconfig /all and make sure everythign is kosher, like ip address, dns servers, gateway, etc.

I use a linksys router too.
As a simple check, enable dhcp on the router and set the network card to obtain IP and DNS automatically, and see if it all works then. If it does, you know it's a configuration problem and not a hardware/windows problem. Whilst using DHCP do an &quot;ipconfig /all&quot; and check the DNS/gateway setting match the ones you were using

How about:
Dns client to resolve host names works slightly differently in W2k than in windows 95/98/NT.

When a request was made for a host name resolution in windows 95/98/NT a ip address was given back from the DNS server, but on win2k when the address is given back it is cached, this may sound ok in principle but when a host has more than one ip address and requests need to be round robined it may give the appearance that the DNS server is not working properly because the client connects to the same ip address each time.

In order to prove this if you have a Win2k machine, drop to a command prompt and ping a proxy, you will notice you get the same ip address each time.

To resolve this issue the following changes need to be made:-

1. From a command prompt type ipconfig /flushdns

2. Change the following reg key:-

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Dnscache\Paramaters.

Look for key MaxCacheEntryTtlLimit and change it to 1


3. Goto Services and then stop and start the DNS Client service.

4. Try to ping proxy to see if round robin works.

Sorry for not getting back quick enough.

I am able to do the loopback address of 127.0.0.1, so I know that is working.

I am unable to ping by DNS or say Google's IP address.

I check ipconfig /all and there is no information listed there at all.

The NIC card has the correct lights lit up on it.

I am unable to bring up the admin web screen for the Linksys router, which is 192.168.1.1

I am not able to ping the other machines on my network. I get a host unreachable error.

So I'm not sure what to do to correct this error to get the web again on this machine.

More specific, here are some of the errors that I am getting:

If pining box on my network:

From DOS: ping 192.168.1.4
Destination host unreachable

From DOS: ping

http://www.google.com

unknown host

http://www.google.com

From a browser:

http://192.168.1.1

Connection was refused

But, the loopback does work

If there is no information at all from ipconfig /all
I would suggest checking to ensure that the nic is setup right.Then check the cable is good.It should be, if the router is refusing connection. Set the NIC TCP/IP settings to IP= 192.168.1.100 Sub mask 255.255.255.0 and default gateway to 192.168.1.1 Preferred DNS 192.168.1.1
This should at least allow entry into the router configuration.
Depending on the model of linksys there is a reset that can be pushed, on some it is in the front others at the back. It is a small hole the same as the manual eject on a CD-rom. Hold that in for 15 to 30 seconds and then try connecting. The reset will reset back to factory specs.

It was Simonbeggs tip for the Regedit that came thru and saved the day, because I am typing this from the machine that had the problem.

Well it happened again, DNS has failed on my Wind 2002 box.

I checked the regedit file again that was referenced above, the MaxCacheEntryTtlLimit and its value is one. I don't know what has happened other than the data light on the modem was flashing on and off and I was losing my internet connection on my windows box.

Again, my Linux box is ok and that is what I am submitting this on.

What should I do besides, upgrade to XP, and/or bang my head against the wall.
