Hi,

I just inherited a company document in Word 2003. It has about 50 pages, but on page 10, there is this mysterious graphic that looks like someone intended it to be a background, but instead it completely eclipses the text (the graphic is solid blue). I just want to get rid of it, but so far I am unable to.

So far, here is what I've tried: I have gone into the header and footer and deleted everything. I have removed all watermarks. I went into Format->Borders and Shading, but once in that window, no matter what I click on, I get a pop-up window that says "The measurement must be between 1 pt. and 31 pt." and it will not let me change anything in that window, or even view the "Page order" or "Shading" tabs.

Any ideas on what's going on here?

How big is the object (whole page or just part of a page)?

What happens if you select all but the final paragraph mark, then copy/paste into a new blank documetn? (Use Ctrl+End, Ctrl+Shift+Home, Ctrl+C, then open a new document and Ctrl+V.)

Does the unwanted object still appear?

Does it print?

Hi,

This graphic may be inserted in either a header or footer. View > Header and Footer... and see if you can select and delete this object.

Ummm...Skip? From the opening post:

"So far, here is what I've tried: I have gone into the header and footer and deleted everything."

Mind you, true, it is possible the OP did not see the object. I just got recently fooled myself I have to say. And that was knowing - being told - the thing was in the header, and I could see it in the document...but could NOT see it in the header. Drove me nuts for 20 minutes before I did.

I would like to hear the answers to tf1's questions.

Hi itfellow,

Given your problem description, it definitely sounds like there's some odd Borders and Shading.

Try going into Format|Borders and Shading again, and clicking on the 'Options' button. That should let you change the problem dimensions to something between 0 and 31pt. You might need to make this change at any one or more of the dropdown options on either the Borders or Page Borders tab.

Alternatively, you could try copying the problem page's contents and using Edit|Paste Special> Unformatted text onto the last preceding/first following 'clean' page, then copy & paste any graphics from the problem page that you want to keep and, finally, delete the problem page.

Cheers
